Van Landingham Estate is known for being a wonderful place for weddings and receptions. It is also a beautiful spot for plein air painting. All who came were pleasantly surprised by a visit by Scott Boyle. Along with Scott, the rest of us: Bob, Cathy, Carol, Connie, Laura and Debbie, enjoyed sketching and painting around the lake, statuary and lovely grounds. Prior to the paint-out some enjoyed the sweet potato browns at Zada Janes. Great time! Want to be in the loop? Email Debbie at dyacenda@aol.com.

Matthews Artists Guild
would love for you join us on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2012
6:30 pm -Social, 7 pm – Meeting
Betsy Birkner
Will pour her heart into her presentation of
Color Theory
One color comes to mind when we think of Valentines Day. The hue of red is the color of love,
a symbol of strength, the blood of life in birth and war, always attracting and repelling us. Discussion around red and its companions on the color wheel will begin with perception and how light and pigment color wheels relate. We will investigate the five components of color and Johannes Itten’s seven Contrasts of Color. A review of color schemes from simple to complex will highlight this lively discussion of the theory of color including examples and applications!
Betsy is a designer, artist, and teacher of Color Theory at CPCC.

Russell Smith Demo Appealed to Both Sides of the Brain

Artist, Russell Smith, showing picture of airplane model

Russell Smith, a local artist who paints primarily aviation themes in oil, gave a lecture and demo about his creative process. He tells us the right brain is visual, which is obviously essential in creating art, but there are times when the left brain is needed especially when rendering realistic images. Russell provided the group with handouts on how to figure proper "viewing distance." He also showed us the meticulous evolution of his works from multiple sketches on tracing and synthetic papers to grisaille underpaintings with strong white highlights to multiple layerings. (He also told us how to create carbons for transfering drawn images that won't smear on canvas... THANKS!). A great demo to start off 2012! Thanks, Russell!
